Legalized sports betting has exploded onto the scene in the United States following the reversal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in 2018. Since then, 33 states plus the District of Columbia have legalized sports betting in some capacity, and this number is sure to increase in the coming years.

Is sports betting legal in West Virginia?

West Virginia legalized sports betting in March 2018 before the PASPA was reversed and accepted the first retail bet in August 2018 at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town. Online sports betting was legalized in December of 2018. However, online betting stopped in March 2019 due to issues with BetLucky (the first sportsbook app in the state), but it returned in August 2019.

How do I bet on sports in West Virginia?

West Virginians over the age of 21 can make online, mobile, and retail wagers, but all legal sports bets have to be made within state lines.

Mobile sportsbooks utilize geolocation to track your phone’s internal GPS chip. When betting online, users are prompted to download a plugin to make legalized bets. If making retail wagers, head to a West Virginia casino or the Greenbrier to make your bets in person.

Can I bet on college sports in West Virginia?

West Virginia residents can bet on two Division 1 programs in the state, but they can't bet on individual player props, such as "Will player "x" score more than 23.5 points" during the college basketball and football seasons.

Along with individual game bets, bettors can place futures bets on their favorite collegiate teams and players. For example, residents can bet on if West Virginia will win the Big 12 in football or basketball. Of course, futures betting is not just subject to schools in the Mountain State, as all available teams and players across the country can be wagered on.

As of right now, nine legal sportsbooks operate in the state of West Virginia, which can be accessed online or at a retail location. However, five casinos across the state have affiliations with various online sportsbooks.
