Following a few setbacks in title fights, Carlos Ocampo has a chance to spice things up at super welterweight. The Mexican fighter faces Tim Tszyu for the interim WBO title on June 17 in Australia, with the winner facing undisputed champion Jermell Charlo.

Showtime airs the fight, which takes place at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

The 27-year-old Ocampo has fought for welterweight gold, falling short twice. He hopes the third time fighting for a title will be the charm against Tszyu, the son of former undisputed super lightweight champion Kostya Tszyu.

A win would provide momentum, leading to a potential win over Charlo later this year. The WBO has ordered Charlo, out of action due to injury, to compete in a fight by September.

"I took the fight against Tim Tszyu because he represents an important challenge in my career,” Ocampo said via Boxing Scene. “He is the one who holds the title today, and on June 18, he will understand what it is to meet a Mexican. I will beat Tim Tsyzyu, make no mistake."

The Sporting News looks into the career of Carlos Ocampo, a man looking to change things up with a win over Tszyu.

Who is Carlos Ocampo?

Hailing from Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, Ocampo won silver in the 2009 and 2011 Mexican National Olympiads.

“Chema” turned pro in 2012 and primarily fought in Mexico to start his career. On a 22-fight win streak to begin his career, Ocampo faced Errol Spence Jr. for the IBF welterweight title in 2018. he lost via first-round knockout and had to work his way back up the ladder.

Following that setback, Ocampo went on a 12-fight win streak, claiming local gold against Omir Rodriguez and Mikael Zewski. Ocampo tested himself again in 2022, facing Sebastian Fundora for the interim WBC super welterweight title. Fundora beat him via unanimous decision following wide scorecards (117-111, 118-111, 119-109) from the judges.

Ocampo recovered from the loss a few months later, beating Mauricio Gutierrez Castor in his last bout, in March, via TKO. The win helped secure a fight against Tszyu, as Charlo required time to recover.
