On June 22, 2021, Governor John Bel Edwards signed the state's sports betting regulation bill into law. At its outset, retail sports betting (at physically licensed casinos) was the only option for Louisianans to get action down.

Online and mobile sports betting later launched on Jan. 28, 2022, giving Louisianans the opportunity to wager on their computers and phones.

Additionally, Louisiana was the first state to allow mobile sports betting on a parish-by-parish basis, with 55 of the state's 64 parishes permitting sports betting. The nine parishes where sports betting is prohibited are Caldwell, Catahoula, Franklin, Jackson, LaSalle, Sabine, Union, West Carroll, and Winn.
